Xpeng Huitian's split flying car ‘Land Aircraft Carrier’ has finally made its official debut, breaking many rumours; before the release of the car, there were many relevant spy photos exposed one after another, one of which was a test car with a particularly long front end, resulting in the body looking quite incongruous.
However, the final production car is still highly reminiscent of the concept car, with typical MPV characteristics, and the real car looks very avant-garde but not ostentatious.
The vehicle should adopt a ‘6×6’ six-wheel drive scheme, and is expected to come in four- and five-seat versions, with an extended rear compartment that is not used for seating, but rather as a carrier for the vehicle.
This is the real face of Xpeng Huitian's ‘land carrier’, and according to the previously released rendering to analyse the vehicle, the roof from C to D pillars at the rear should be able to be folded. After releasing the aircraft, the roof of the tail can be folded down, forming a visual effect similar to the sliding back. Of course, it is also possible that there is no folding function, just a hatch that can be opened as a whole, which is not important. What needs to be explained is the special feature of this car: the main part of the car that travels on land is not able to fly, so this car is not a ‘flying car!’ as it is commonly thought. At the same time, the vehicle on display has no wheels, but is only a six-axis vehicle with legs, similar to some special helicopters, and this part does not belong to the flying car either.
That's why it's called a ‘land carrier’, which is just a six-wheel-drive MPV carrying a small six-axis vehicle.
It is a combination of a car and a flying machine.
However, its potential value is still very high, or playability is high; because the flying machine can be used to explore the road or expand the exploration radius, and can play an important role in special scenarios.
Powertrain
The ‘Land Carrier’ uses an extended range drive system.
Expected.
Since it is to be used as a carrier for the flight unit, it is important to take into account the power consumption of the vehicle when it is loaded, as well as recharging the vehicle while travelling or while stationed outdoors. A purely electric vehicle is obviously not a good idea as a platform - after all, the ‘mothership’ doesn't even have a place to recharge. So the only correct solution is to extend the range, driving in pure electric mode for short-distance connectivity, and using the engine to extend the range and charge the flight unit for long-distance driving.
But with its 800V silicon carbide high voltage platform, the battery pack charging efficiency should be high.
As for the vehicle's powertrain, there's no need to talk about it - it's electric motor-driven, of course! All that needs to be said about the vehicle is its driving modes and safety systems. There are only two systems that can be learnt so far, and theoretically there is enough safety redundancy. As for the driving modes, it's not yet clear, but regardless of the driving mode, you'll need a corresponding driving licence to fly the vehicle. While Xpeng expects to sign up 200 flight camps within the year, these helicopter-like vehicles will still require a licence, otherwise there could be unaffordable consequences wherever they fly.
About the price
It is not expected to exceed 2 million yuan.
I don't know if I'm wrong, but I remember that the price information mentioned was ‘not more than 1 million RMB’. If I'm not mistaken, then the price of this car is bound to be quite high.
So who would actually buy such a ‘car’?
Of course there will be people who will go for it. After all, even Yangwang U8 such as electric drive ‘amphibious’ million-class new energy off-road vehicle will be chosen, so this can fly in the sky dual-purpose vehicle will naturally be more attractive. At the same time, the helicopter flight licence learning costs have been significantly reduced, once easily two or three hundred thousand yuan cost reduced to five or six million yuan, when this threshold is lowered, I believe that the flying car will be more and more people interested in.
Focus:
‘Mothership’ is six wheels and the probability is that it will be six-wheel drive, body dimensions of about 5500 * 2000 * 2000 mm.
A four-wheel drive four-motor crossover can be sold for more than a million dollars, a six-wheel drive extended-range crossover will be more attractive if the price is comparable.
So the ‘land carrier’ of Xiaopeng Huitian is indeed very attractive, and the land unit after separate splitting will also be very attractive; the owner can choose to match the programme according to the travel planning and scenarios, for example, if not ready to fly, then you can take a motorboat, and if you are ready to go to the mountains and forests for exploring, then you can bring along the ATV, so that a ‘mother ship’ can be sold at a price of more than one million yuan. Such a ‘mother ship’ can activate the imagination, and the playability will always be high.
Xpeng is the only vehicle that is particularly interesting so far, and objectively speaking, it's the only one of its kind.
