Recently, SAIC Passenger Vehicle Executive Vice President Yu Jingmin revealed in a media interview that the solid-state batteries developed by SAIC will first be installed in MG products, with the new vehicle expected to launch in the second quarter of 2025. Additionally, an electric car model, the ES5, will be launched globally in November this year.

Currently, several car manufacturers, including GAC Aion, Dongfeng, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Porsche, Hyundai Kia, Nissan, Toyota, and others, have announced that they are developing solid-state batteries. Most of the models slated to feature these batteries are expected to have a range exceeding 1,000 km.

As the name implies, the electrolyte in solid-state batteries is solid, unlike the liquid electrolyte in traditional lithium batteries. Compared to liquid batteries, solid-state batteries offer several advantages: high safety (non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-volatile, and leak-proof), high energy density (saving nearly 40% in volume and 25% in weight due to the absence of a diaphragm and liquid electrolyte), longer cycle life (with an ideal cycle count of up to 45,000 times), and a wider operational temperature range (-25°C to 60°C). Solid-state batteries are also categorized into three types based on the mass percentage of liquid electrolyte: "semi-solid," "quasi-solid," and "full solid." The models currently available with a range exceeding 1,000 km predominantly feature semi-solid batteries, such as those used by NIO, IM, and other manufacturers.

Xu Yanhua, Secretary-General of the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, stated that in China, the market structure will likely continue to be dominated by high-energy-density liquid batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries until 2030. By around 2035, the share of lithium iron phosphate batteries is expected to decline, while the proportion of high-energy-density liquid batteries with cost advantages will increase. Solid-state batteries and sodium-ion batteries will also begin to capture a certain market share.
