Currently, the mid-to-high-end pure electric SUV market segment has become a "prime target" for car companies. BYD has also introduced several models in this segment. In addition to the BYD Song L EV and BYD Seal 07 EV, there are the BYD Tang EV and Denza N7. However, the Tang EV currently on sale is still the older "oil-to-electric" version, which is clearly underpowered in today's competitive environment. As a result, the new generation BYD Tang is highly anticipated.

Based on available public information, BYD's new generation Tang series will actually have three models: Tang, Tang L, and Tang MAX. The Tang MAX is positioned as an MPV, and the positioning of the Tang L can be compared to the BYD Qin L and Song L. Due to the need to address range concerns, both the Tang L and Tang MAX will be hybrids, while the new generation Tang will continue to offer both hybrid and pure electric versions. However, this time the pure electric version is clearly aiming to be much more competitive.

According to known information, the key details of the new generation Tang pure electric model are as follows: the body will be lengthened based on the current model, reportedly exceeding 5 meters, setting it apart from the BYD Song L; there will be both single-motor and dual-motor versions, with the single-motor version switching from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive to enhance the driving experience; the chassis will be based on the e-Platform 3.0, and the battery will use CTB technology; the suspension system will feature a front double wishbone and a rear five-link setup; and mid-to-high-end models will be equipped with Yunnian C.

It is clear that BYD has put significant effort into the new generation Tang EV model. Several aspects of the current Tang that have been criticized, including the small size, limited space, poor chassis, weak handling, and the "oil-to-electric" conversion, will be addressed.

There is still relatively little information available about the new generation Tang. The hybrid model has been seen in fully camouflaged spy photos, but the pure electric model has not yet been spotted. However, it is certain that it will adopt a family design language, so the front face can be expected to resemble that of the Song L.

Additionally, based on BYD's current progress, the new generation Tang is not expected to be launched too soon, so it is likely to feature the second-generation blade battery. Reports indicate that BYD will release this battery later this year, with the energy density expected to increase from the current 140Wh/kg to around 190Wh/kg. As a result, the cruising range of the new Tang is worth looking forward to, with an expected increase of several dozen kilometers over the current 554-688 kilometers.

In terms of intelligent driving assistance, BYD's "Eye of God" high-level intelligent driving assistance system will be included, and the car system will also receive a full upgrade to further enhance the user’s driving experience.

Finally, regarding the most critical aspect—pricing—considering that the Song L EV and Seal 07 EV both start at around $26,700, the starting price of the new Tang EV is expected to be around $30,000.

Summary

Since the beginning of this year, independent brands have started to gain momentum in the mid-to-high-end pure electric market. Zeekr, Xiaomi, and NIO have all performed well, and the recently launched STELATO S9 from BAIC Huawei has also made a strong impression. In contrast, BYD, the "big brother," has lagged slightly behind. The sales of its pure electric models priced above $30,000 have been disappointing, with the high-end segment still relying on hybrids. Therefore, the new generation Tang EV is expected to be a key model for BYD, competing with Tesla and other emerging brands in China’s mid-to-high-end pure electric market, aiming to overcome the "high-end pure electric sales shortfall" and solidify BYD's position in this competitive segment.
